ECOTONO: The presence of the living

Biomedial installation and performatic artwork / 2020-current (ongoing project)

Ecotone, derived from the Greek eco – (oikos or household) and tone, (tones or tension), is a place where the ecological components are in tension.  This is the transition zone between two or more different ecological communities (biocenosis).

This transdisciplinary project consist in two interconnected artworks (or aspects):

In the first art piece "A portrait of the air", we capture air samples from different areas in the city of Santiago of Chile and its surroundings, with a special instrument. Then, this is processed in laboratory through a nanoscale tracking process, revealing the microparticles present in the air samples. Then, this material will be photo-chemically transferred to biofilms sensitive to the organic particles present in the air where it will be exposed, establishing an aesthetic interconnection from the micro to the macro environment, the visible and “no visible”; and also, as a small portrait of the bio-social dynamics of the city.

The second aspect, is an light-art installation based on an Michelson Interferometer, a laser beam arrangement that is very sensible to waves or floating particles in the close environment. The result is a light pattern interference, sensible to the presence of the spectator, composing a light poetics of the co-creation between the visitor and the phisical environment,in which an individual and the no visible floating elements around them, interact.
